Larry Foote a Lion

Michigan's own Larry Foote is officially a Lion.

It had been speculated all the way back to December of last year by BL that Larry Foote would be a Lion this season. He is another undersized MLB, but he has been on one of the best defenses as a starter for years in the NFL. A 1 year deal sealed the deal that Larry Foote will more than likely be the starting MLB in the Lions new, much faster defense.

MLB Larry Foote joins, Rookie S Louis Delmas, and Free Agent Signings DT Grady Jackson, OLB Julian Peterson, CB Philip Buchanon, CB Anthony Henry, and CB Eric King as new players on the Lions defense. That is 6 new starters, and I feel there will more than likely be 1 more added before the season begins. For those who think we have ignored the defense, I am not sure I understand.

What You May Not Have Known About the Lions Draft

Let me start with the 76th pick of the draft, DeAndre Levy of Wisconsin. This was without question the harshest graded pick in all circles considering the Lions' draft. I believe it is because he was LISTED as an OLB. Probably the 1 position on the Detroit Lions where they NEED NO HELP. But here's the thing. The Lions coaching staff drafted Levy as a Middle Linebacker. They had no intentions of playing him outside. He is smallish, only 238, but he is 6'2. I would bet that come preseason, Levy will be up to 245. He then would be a 6'2 245 MLB who can run a 4.50 or under 40 yard dash. Levy has a history of lighting up the biggest backs in college football, and at Wisconsin actually played a lot of inside LB. I am not saying that this pick is now a "A" grade, but it's definitely not a D or F.

6th Round Pick Aaron Brown was the 3rd best KR in the NCAA last season amongst full time KR. He averaged 30 yards per return. 3rd rd pick Derrick Williams was one of the top PR in the nation over that past 4 years. He returned 6 kicks for TD in his career at PSU. The Lions best PR was ranked 35th in the league, and their best KR was ranked 48th. Obviously this was a huge need for the Lions. It is a need that gets overlooked by casual fans, but if you are giving up 5 yards on each KR/PR exchange, throughout the season that is going to catch up with you.

To me these topics have been overlooked when people in the area talk about the draft. They instantly say all 3 of these selections were wasted picks. I say lets wait and see. If starting the 2010 NFL season DeAndre Levy is the team's starting MLB, Derrick Williams is in the slot and returning punts, and Aaron Brown is taking back Kick Returns like Mel Gray. Then we will have some people wondering why they questioned these picks.

NFC East Draft Grades

Dallas Cowboys
Best Pick:
Jason Williams (OLB) 69th, potential speed rusher for ailing defense
Worst Pick:
David Buehler (K) 172nd, Incumbent Nick Folk is one of the most accurate kickers in the league
Grade: D

New York Giants
Best Pick: Hakeem Nicks (WR) 29th, Potential Plaxico replacement
Worst Pick: none, even the late round picks are expected to compete for spots on the depth chart
Grade: A

Philadelphia Eagles
Best Pick:
Jeremy Maclin (WR) 19th, The Eagles moved up to get Maclin and team him with their other dynamic WR DeSean Jackson.... look out.
Worst Pick: Fenuki Tupou (OT) 159th, Not technically sound, low end career backup at best
Grade: B+

Washington Redskins
Best Pick: Brian Orakpo (DE) 13th, Top 5 talent falls to the skins and they took about 45 seconds to get their card in to the commish.
Worst Pick: Robert Henson (LB) 186th, possible special teams contributor.
Grade: B

NFC North Draft Grades

Green Bay Packers
Best Pick: B.J. Raji 9th
Worst Pick: None, but gave up a lot to get Clay Matthews
Grade: B

Detroit Lions
Best Pick: Louis Delmas 33rd, take a look at the top defenses in the NFL, all got great Safeties.
Worst Pick: Deandre Levy 3rd round, will be shocked if he ever contributes.
Grade: B

Minnesota Vikings
Best Pick: Phil Loadhold 54th AP is getting lots of love, Peyton style.
Worst Pick: Made all solid picks, some will say Percy at 22, but they need a playmaker outside.
Grade: B-

Chicago Bears
Best Pick: DJ Moore (ton of value at 119)
Worst Pick: None, at all. Great draft, especially if you count Cutler.
Grade: A+
Cutler for 1st rd pick, and didn't have a 2nd rd pick. Still ended up with Jarron Gilbert, J Iglesias, and DJ Moore.

Steelers release MLB and Detroit native Larry Foote

Foote is on the record as saying he WANTS to come back home to DETROIT

The Pittsburgh Steelers released former UM star Larry Foote today and he has expressed his desire to some home to the D and play for the Lions. Foote is a two time Super Bowl champ with the Steelers and recorded a career high of 102 tackles in 2005 and has been a 5 year starter for one of the leagues top defenses.

While Foote has been considered by most to be too small to play in the middle of a defense he has done it for years. Adding Foote would be a good move by the Lions because of the hole he would be filling and the leadership he brings to the table.

Lion's Draft Grade (Scotto version)

1st Round- #1- #1 overall

QB- Matthew Stafford - Georgia Pick grade: B-

Until the Lions have an O-line, I can’t grade Stafford any higher than this; thru no fault of his own. He’s got the size, and the arm strength to be a good NFL QB. He grades high in all the measurables, and also has the intangibles that can make him successful. I’m still not sold that the Lions needed to take a “franchise” QB at this point, with the lack of talent that permeates the roster. Say “goodbye” to Drew Henson’s NFL career.

1st Round -# 20- #20 overall

TE – Brandon Pettigrew- Oklahoma State Pick grade: B

I give this pick a low-ish grade, thru no fault of Pettigrew, like Stafford above. Taking a TE with the 20th overall pick in the draft is a move that a team that had a bad season due to injuries to starter’s makes, when they are close to making the playoffs. As a player I love Pettigrew, he’s a complete tight end. He can block and catch. He immediately becomes the starter, and possibly a force in the passing game and an asset to the running game for Kevin Smith. With all the holes on the Lions roster, Pettigrew practically has to become an All-star TE to justify this selection, considering who was available to fill other needs.

2nd Round - #1 – #33 overall

Safety – Louis Delmas- Western Michigan Pick grade: B

I’ve watched Delmas for 4 years at WMU. He’s a fiery leader, and very capable player. He’s got the “stuff” you want from a FS on the field. He’s aggressive, a big-hitter and can also make the pick for you. A knock on Delmas is that he goes “all out” all the time so durability can become an issue. Another knock is that he sometimes gets too aggressive going for the knock-out hit, instead of making the safe play and just wrapping up the ball carrier. Considering that I didn’t think the Lions needed a safety, this pick confirms that the Lions front-office was going for “best talent” available.

3rd Round - #12 - #76 overall

OLB- DeAndre Levy – Wisconsin Pick grade: D

The Lions have Ernie Sims at one OLB spot, and added Julian Peterson in an off-season trade. Levy is considered a back-up and late round prospect by everything that I have read. Taking him in the 3rd round at a position where we already have 2 solid NFL starters doesn’t make any sense to me at all. Reports say the Lions are going to move him to the inside. There’s a problem, he’s awfully light for that position.

3rd Round - #18 - #82 overall

WR- Derrick Williams – Penn State Pick grade: B+

Hey! a WR named Williams, and the Lions are on the clock. No brain-er right?? Sorry, I digress. Despite the fact that the Lions signed former PSU receiver Bryant Johnson in the off-season, I still think Derrick Williams gives the Lions good value with this pick as he was considered a slightly higher round pick. He’s small and doesn’t have top end speed, and his route running skills might need work, still he’s got good hands and will go over the middle for the catch. His return skills also give this pick added value.

4th Round #15 - #115 overall

DT- Sammie Lee Hill – Stillman College Pick grade: D

Small school prospect that has good size and measurables. My guess this is a Jim Schwartz project pick. (Schwartz turned Courtland Finnegan into a pro-bowl player.) How quickly Hill adjusts to the increased size and speed of the competition at the NFL level is going to determine how good or bad this pick will end up being. There will be a steep learning-curve. At least the Lions did finally address the D-line issues. Granted, Hill is a project that might turn out dividends down the road. My guess is we won’t see him on the field till late 2010. Sorry he’s just too much of a project for the 4th round.

6th Round # 19 - #192 overall

RB – Aaron Brown – TCU Pick grade: C

Projected as a low-round pick. Brown has decent size, but is relatively slow for an NFL back. Given the options behind Kevin Smith (Brian Calhoun, Aveion Cason) I can’t fault the Lions for going after a back-up, but that is all that Brown will be if he ends up sticking come opening day. If he plays, it means that Smith is out of action.

7th Round #19 - #228

OT – Lydon Murtha – Nebraska Pick grade: C-

Prospect with excellent size and measurables. Too lean and plays too up-right for the pro-game. Most reports have him as a developmental prospect, who might be drafted late. Two positives here with this pick, first the Lions picked a player were he was projected, and second, they finally addressed the O-line. Granted, if he makes the roster and plays, everyone else is hurt.

7th Round #26 - #235

OLB – Zach Follett – Cal Pick grade: D

Projected as depth LB and special teams player, with good energy, and a high motor. Once again, Lions have starters already and this is the 2nd OLB picked. Most scouts have him as a good rush LB for a 3-4 defense. I’m not sure the Lions are running that scheme.

7th Round #46 – 255

TE – Dan Gronkowski Pick grade: D

Once again the Lions pick a 2nd player at the same position. Gronkowski grades out as a good blocking TE, and #3 TE on the roster. Having already drafted Pettigrew, my take is that Michael Gaines, and Casey FitzSimmons must be looking over their shoulders with this pick. If Gronkowski makes the roster one or both of the above will be gone. I still don’t see how Gronkowski fits into what the Lions are trying to build.

While I like how the Lions handled the Stafford negotiations, “here’s your offer, take it or leave it, because Curry has accepted the one we gave him”. The toughness shown in negotiations quickly disintegrated, as they gave Stafford the largest rookie contract ever.

The Lions had a need at MLB, D-Line, O-Line and CB. Of those positions they potentially addressed only MLB, and that is unlikely, for the 2009 season with this draft.

By drafting Murtha, and Hill, technically the Lions “filled” holes on the lines. Neither player will or should be starting, if even making the roster for 2009. Both players should end up on the developmental squad.

Levy and maybe even Follett will be moved from OLB inside so again technically the Lions addressed a need. Once again, neither player should be on the field.

I want to like this draft because in all likely-hood, the Lions will have 4 starters for the 2010 season coming out of the first 3 rounds in this draft, Stafford, Pettigrew, Delmas and Williams. If that happens, I’ll call the first half of this draft a success, and change my grade accordingly.

There were players available at 20, 33, and 76 that would have helped this team address bigger needs for the 2009 season, so that’s why my grade for this draft is a C- .

Lions Draft Grades

Here we go, being a Lions fan is SWEET!

#1 Overall Selection
Matthew Stafford Quarterback Georgia
The guy has all the tools, can throw the ball over a mountain! Makes throws that 98% of QBs cannot make, the problem is that he tries them far too often. He improved every year in the toughest conference in the country, and had a ton of injuries to his offense this season. I wasn't as high on Jason Smith as the rest of the world, he jumped 20 spots in 2 months. Kinda scary. I also didn't think drafting an OLB and moving him to MLB at the #1 overall choice was the best decision either.
Grade for #1 pick: B (Stafford is not a top notch, no doubt stud, but he has the tools)

#20 Overall Selection
Brandon Pettigrew Tight End Oklahoma State

Pettigrew is the consensus #1 overall Tight End. On almost everyone's board he was the top rated player left when the Lions picked. I still do not believe on this team, you could spend a first round pick on a tight end. I know he is a great blocker, and will help the OL, but still. Another problem is that he is going to be public enemy #1, he has no chance at succeeding in Detroit. He is not the type of Antonio Gates or Jason Witten TE, he is not going to be a fantasy stud. No matter what he does to prove his worth, it will never be enough in Detroit.
Grade for 20th overall pick: C- (I love Pettigrew as a player, he just isnt the player I would have taken)

#33 Overall Selection
Louis Delmas Free Safety Western Michigan
Delmas is a stud safety. Going into the Senior Bowl he was on the radar, and then he blew up. Most called him the most impressive DB in Mobile. He can hit and cover, he will make big plays in the NFL. In Tennessee, Schwartz had 2 good safeties, and a great FS (Griffin). Delmas was at a needed position, and the top player at that position. Great Pick. Delmas also played CB his first year at Western.
Grade for the 33rd overall pick: A-

#76 Overall Selection
Deandre Levy Outside Linebacker Wisconsin
Levy was predicted by most to go in the 5th round. He shows flashes as an above average athletic pass rusher at OLB. He should bring much needed depth to the Lions OLB corps. Not sure this pick makes as much sense as some of the O-line prospects available at this point, or even on of the MLB. Maybe Schwartz likes Paris Lenon, it at least appears that way.
Grade for 76th overall pick: C-

#72 Overall Selection
Derrick Williams Slot Receiver Penn State
Derrick Williams was the #1 overall player in the nation his senior year of high school. For whatever reason his career at Penn State did not live up to the hype. He is a great athlete, and return man, but was extremely inconsistent in the passing game. He disappeared at times. Some will blame his lack of quarterback play, and there is definitely something to that. But, studs find ways to make plays and he didn't always. I still like the pick, a good player who can cross underneath, catch WR Screens, and even break a deep ball from time to time.
Grade for #72 Overall Selection: B+

#115 Overall Selection
Sammie Lee Hill Defensive Tackle Stillman
Hill has elite size and strength. At 6'4 330+ he was the biggest DL prospect in the entire draft. He shows a violent punch and push up the middle, and matched with Grady Jackson there should be little room up the middle of the Lions defense. Playing at Stillman, obviously the level of competition was not great, that will be a big adjustment. I love the 330+ DTs, so I like this pick a lot.
Grade for #115 Overall Selection: A-

Other picks: RB Aaron Brown (TCU), OT Lydon Murtha (Nebraska), OLB Zach Follett (Cal), TE Dan Gronkowski (Maryland)

Overall Grade: B
Obviously the key to this draft is the progression of Stafford. He is getting 42 million dollars whether he is Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf. If Stafford becomes a Pro-Bowl QB there will be a ton of CROW EATING going on around here. If he stinks it up, he will be booed more than anyone in the history of the world, that's a promise. Lions fans have absolutely lost it, they were nice for a long time, but no longer.

Heres Hope For Sunday

I am going to focus on the two 3rd round picks.

Here's a list Lions. I am hoping you pick 2 off of it.

Michael Johnson DE (rated as high as 15th overall yesterday)
Duke Robinson OG (crushing Run Blocking guard)
Jamon Meridith OT (played every OL position other than C)
Jarron Gilbert DT (tremendous athlete at DT, bit small)
DJ Moore CB (highly rated corner)
Jasper Brinkley MLB (crushing tackler from SEC)
Derrick Williams WR (only if the other 6 are gone when we pick the 2nd time)

Only Here

Only in Detroit. I swear, really, only here.

Only in a place that had Matt Millen run a franchise into the ground for far too long than ever should have been allowed.

Only in a place that takes an overweight WR when you have spent the last 2 years picks on WR.

Only in a place where most of the draft picks from the past 5 years are out of the NFL.

Only in the land of Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Aaron Gibson, Terry Fair, Teddy Lehman, Shaun Cody, Drew Stanton, Joey Harrington, and Jordan Dizon.

Only in a place where you can draft a QB in the 2nd round one year, and a MLB in the 2nd rd the next year and most places list those 2 positions as the top two positions of need the year after.

Only in a place where you have the 2nd worst defense in the HISTORY OF THE NFL, and hire a coach from one of the best defensives in the league, can a team

spend the 20th pick on TE Brandon Pettigrew.

---------
I understand that the Lions are a long, long way away. I also understand the idea of taking "the best player available." I know the top guys at the Lions warned us, "we cannot worry about offense, or defense, we have to take the best guy there."

But it is going to be very hard to explain to me how drafting a TE, on a team that has a need at almost all 22 starting positions helps this team get better faster than the other choices.

This is why, when the Bills were selecting 11th overall, I looked to a friend and said, "I hope they take Pettigrew here, so the Lions don't have a chance to mess this up."

......at that time they laughed, a little over an hour later, it was more like screaming.

GO LIONS!!!

Stafford is a Lion..and what should happen next

Now that it is official that the Lions are taking Matthew Stafford, I hope that the brain trust follows up and continues to transform the team.

By negotiating with Stafford and having a "plan b" in place, by offering a contract to Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry, that he accepted, that amazingly (insert eye roll here) was leaked to the press somehow.

I truly hope that Martin Mayhew, Tom Lewand and Jim Schwartz continue to be aggressive and upgrade this woebegone franchise.

There is no way they can turn this disaster that has been 40+ years in the making with today's draft, what they CAN do however, is start to turn things around.

What will be interesting to see starting in about 30 minutes, and then as the summer and fall develop, is how Stafford can react and adjust to the life in the NFL.

That will start the first time he makes his appearance in Detroit.

Lions fans made it clear, starting from the start that they did not want Stafford as the Lions first pick in the draft. That was no more evident than the press conference where the Lions announced the new uniforms and logo. Fans started chanting "We want Curry".

How does Stafford react to being under pressure, of not being the choice of the fans. Matthew, if you take my advice, please call Curtis Joseph, and Eric Hipple, talk to them about the "pressure" that fans in Detroit can and will place on you.

Now that Stafford is in the fold. Where do Mayhew and Lewand go from here.

What do they do to address the holes on the O-Line, and Defense with this draft.

I hope they go Defense with the next two picks, then address the O-line in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Get a decent CB, LB and S in this years draft, as well as O-linemen that can compete for jobs protecting Stafford.

Does Daunte Cullpeper get the majority of the starts, on the field, while the coaching staff guides Stafford to the starting nod, with a patient time table.

By that, I hope that Stafford doesn't see the field in 2009 at all. We have Culpepper, Stanton and Henson on the roster. Use 2009 as a "red-shirt" season for Stafford. Let him compete for the starting job for the 2010 season.

Its Draft time, lets see what happens.

More proof that nobody really knows anything...

Months of hearing all these "experts" give you opinions.

Now, the night before the draft it is supposedly set in stone that KC is taking DE Tyson Jackson from LSU 3rd overall.

That's pretty much what you have read everywhere, right??

(we had him 28th)

Curry to KC was rumored for weeks to be as good as golden, or not so much.

Officially Not Suprised

The Lions sign QB Matthew Stafford to a 6 year deal that was anything but cheap. 42 million guaranteed. The local reports were that the Lions were working to get the guaranteed closer to 30 million. As usual, the Lions disappoint. Stafford could turn out to be great, but its hard not to doubt it.

*the one thing I can say is that I have been begging for a QB with arm strength and we now have one

KC trades Tony Gonzalez

The Atlanta Falcons picked up a nice new toy for QB Matt Ryan. They sent their second round pick in next year's draft for 10-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez. Great move for the Falcons.

DB Prospects for the NFL Draft

I am grouping the CB and S position together because both positons lack depth. CBs have a decent group in the 2nd-4th round, but there is quite a drop off after the top 2.
DB POSITION GRADE: B+

1. Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State 6'0 205
Malcolm Jenkins was dominate throughout his career at Ohio State. He played well enough to play time at both CB and S. He is the definition of a ball hawk. Does not have ideal speed for corner in the NFL, but is not slow. Should play FS, but could be a great corner as well. Top-notch defensive back prospect. Should be gone by the 20th pick.
DRAFT GRADE: 95

2. Vontae Davis CB Illinois 5'11 203
Physically, he is exactly what you want at corner. Elite speed and overall athleticism, but from time takes plays, even series off. Cousin of Vernon Davis, and has a lot of the same characteristics as a football player. Will impress you when you watch him go through drills and practice. When you spend time looking at game film though you will be dissappointed quite a bit.
DRAFT GRADE: 83

3. Louis Delmas S Western Michigan 5'11 204
Delmas had a terrific showing at the Senior Bowl, moving himself into the top safety spot in the draft. He played at Western Michigan University in the MAC, therefor he did not get a lot of attention. He is an aggressive safety that will make plays both on balls in the air, and ball carriers on the ground. He will definitely make mistakes in the passing game, as well as overpursuing from time to time. His upside though, far outways the negatives associated with Delmas.
DRAFT GRADE:82

4. Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest 5'9 190
4 year starter with 21 career interceptions. Top notch athlete, was a return man in college. Great ball skills, and extremely confident in his abilities. Good leaper, has made plays consistently throughout his entire career at Wake. Smith will see his name come off the board by the time we get to pick 40, if not earlier.
DRAFT GRADE: 82

5. William Moore S Mizzou 6'0 220
Strong Safety prospect who has fallen throughout the year. Was once a top ten prospect, and now could fall to the bottom of the 2nd round. Has had issues in coverage, but makes many plays against the run. Has great size, but possibly may lack the essential skills to cover deep in NFL Cover 2 and Cover 3 packages. Moore is still the 2nd best safety prospect, but has lost a lot of luster in the past few months. Was out played in Mobile.
DRAFT GRADE: 77

MLB Prospects for NFL Draft

The MLB position has two top prospects and then lacks any semblance of depth. Outside of the top two you are looking at projects or career back-ups. If Curry was to get taken by Detroit, that would add to the MLB class as he would be asked to play inside for the Lions.
MLB Grade: D+

1. Rey Maualuga USC 6'2 260
Maualuga is a big, nasty hard hitting MLB who is great against the run. He is an effective blitzer and is solid in coverage. Does not posess elite speed. Has been called too aggressive.

Draft Grade: 90

2. James Laurinitis Ohio St 6'2 244
Many have called Laurinitis the smartest player in the draft. Has sideline to sideline speed and is a solid tackler. Has played inside and outside while starting three years and winning almost every award possible. Has trouble shedding blocks.

Draft Grade: 81

3. Darry Beckwith LSU 6' 242
Lacks ideal height and struggles to shed blocks. Great athleticism for an inside linebacker. Played in the SEC, and led a dominate LB corp at LSU. Beckwith had a poor senior season with injuries and only 51 tackles. He was expected to dominate and struggled at times. Could fall into 3rd even 4th round.
Draft Grade: 71

4. Dannell Ellerbe Georgia 6'1 235

Insanely quick, and athletic. Has the physical ability to make any play you could ask of a backer. He is considered very small for an NFL ILB, he may need to add upwards of 20 lbs. Injured in his senior year and had close to zero production. Will fall into 3rd round.

DRAFT GRADE: 69

5. Jasper Brinkley South Carolina 6'2 255

Ideal size, basically a brick wall in the middle of your defense. Will punish ball carriers that come near him. Lacks outstanding sideline speed, can be beaten to corner. Will excel against the run, and struggle mightily in pass coverage. Durability is a major concern, but he is now 2 years removed from his brutal knee injury. Brinkley will be taken late 3rd, early 4th round.

DRAFT GRADE:67

OLB Prospects For the NFL Draft

The OLB position is a deep position that is very versatile. Many's top rated prospect overall is at OLB, and he supposedly is versatile enough to play MLB. There are 3-4 speed rushers, strong side backers, coverage backers and tackling machines. The position also could end up stronger when some of the DE prospects go to 3-4 teams and play outside backer.
DRAFT POSITION GRADE: B-

1. Aaron Curry (Wake Forest) 6'2 254
Curry has the size and strength that is ideal for the Linebacker position in the NFL. He has been given the title of best overall prospect by many, but don't be fooled. As talented as Curry is he does have some flaws. He basically has no pass rush repertoire, and makes many mistakes in pass coverage. That being said, I have heard him called a 1 year wonder. Makes little sense to me considering statistically his Junior year was at least as good as his Senior season. He took 4 INT back to the house his Junior year. Curry is a great LB prospect, but he may not be quite the player some are making him out to be. Curry should be gone by the 3rd pick.
DRAFT GRADE: 94 (88 mlb)

2. Clay Matthews (USC) 6'3 240
Matthews has the bloodlines, that is for sure. His father was a NFL Lifer, and Uncle Bruce Matthews is a hall of famer. Matthews has always been on the NFL radar, but blew up from bowl season until this point. He is considered the best pass rushing OLB, and may very well end up on a 3-4 defense rushing the passer . Matthews can sometimes be too aggressive, over pursuing or falling for play action and losing his responsibilities in coverage. Matthews should be gone in the first 20 picks.
DRAFT GRADE: 84

3. Brian Cushing (USC) 6'3 245
Cushing has the absolute perfect build for a OLB in the league. He may even have the abilities to play any LB position in any scheme. He is a solid tackler with decent pass rush/coverage skills. He seems to lack effort from time to time, having some question his work ethic. He was highly touted out of high school but had several issues with health in his first 3 seasons. Cushing should be a strong side LB for a NFL team next season. He will be gone in the first round of the draft.
DRAFT GRADE: 81

4. Clint Sintim (Virginia) 6'3 260
Huge body, great strength. Uses his size and arms to his advantage. Outstanding pass rusher as well as tackler. Lacks some ability to cover consistently. 27 sacks and 40 TFL in his career at Virginia. Sintim should end up playing strong side for a 4-3 team and he will excel. Sintim will have a solid and lengthy career.
DRAFT GRADE: 78

5. Connor Barwin (Cincinnati) 6'3 255
Possibly the most versatile athlete in the draft. Played 3 seasons in college at TE. Had 700 rec yards and 6 TD at Tight End. Some pro scouts actually like him better at TE due to his "rawness" at the linebacker position. He is a freakish athlete for his size, and is great in coverage. He is still learning which will hurt him on draft day, but if he gets into a system that lets him make plays against the pass he will be successful in the NFL. Should be gone by the middle of the 3rd round.
DRAFT GRADE: 72

DT Prospects for the NFL Draft

There will definitely be teams that get starting Defensive Tackles in this years draft, 3 most likely in the 1st round. There also will be some really good DTs taken in the next few rounds. There are both 3-4 and 4-3 DTs available as well which adds to the positions standing.
DT POSITION GRADE: A-

1. B.J. Raji (Boston College) 6'2 340
Raji was flying up the draft boards before the reports of a failed drug test at the NFL Combine surfaced. Fits both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. Has great size and quickness. Raji is a serious run stuffer and can be a "2 gap" DT. Raji will not rush the QB effectively but will dominate against the run. He will be taken in the top 10 picks.
DRAFT GRADE: 93

2. Peria Jerry (Mississippi) 6'1 300
Jerry was a very productive player in the SEC conference. He is effective in both the running game and in pass rushing situations (7 sacks in '08). Not the best size for a NFL DT, but will start from day one on his new team. He plays well enough to be a 3-4 DT, but seems to fit 4-3 scheme much better. Jerry should be gone before 25th overall. I would love to see the Lions grab him at 20th overall.
DRAFT GRADE: 86

3. Ziggy Hood (Mizzou) 6'3 300
Very good motor, has got credit from day one for his effort. Great size and strength, had 15 sacks in final 2 seasons at Missouri. Gets up to deflect passes with his 6'3 frame. Not an elite player at any particular skill, but good at all. Has very little in the weakness category. Every so often gets upright and loses leverage against the run. Ziggy should be a first round pick.
DRAFT GRADE: 82

4. Ron Brace (Boston College) 6'4 330
Played side by side with #1 overall DT prospect B.J. Raji, this definitely helped his production as Raji faced double teams consistently. At the same time, that took away from the NFL "pub" going Brace's direction. Brace is a quality DT, 18.5 TFL his last two seasons at BC. Brace's inconsitency in both the pass rush and in leverage during running plays will keep him outside of Round 1, but he should be scooped up in the 2nd rd.
DRAFT GRADE:74

5. Terrance Taylor (Michigan) 6'0 310
There may be a bit of bias in this pick, but I know what kind of player Taylor is. His ONLY downfall is his heigth. At 6'0 tall many would tell you that you have exactly ZERO chance at being an NFL DT. His production at Michigan and his combine results (at the top of every strength drill) will make him a 3rd round pick. Terrance uses excellent leverage to go with his elite strength to shut down the run game inside.

DE Prospects for the NFL Draft

The DE position in this years draft is stocked with many 'tweeners who may have to switch positions in the NFL . Most of the top of the class are pass rush specialists and most struggle versus the run.
DE Position grade: A-

1. Brian Orakpo Texas 6'3 263
Earned the nickname "O-sack-po" while at Texas. Amazing athlete who performs on the field as well. Relies on speed moves with too much frequency. Possible 'tweener who could best fit at OLB in a 3-4 scheme.
DRAFT GRADE: 91

2. Tyson Jackson LSU 6'4 296
Easily the biggest of the top DE's in this class. Average pass rusher but stout versus the run. Often compared to fellow LSU alum Marcus Spears. Best fit will probably be as a 3-4 DE but could man any DL spot in a 4-3.
DRAFT GRADE: 83

3. Everette Brown Florida St. 6'2 256
Yet another tweener who may lack ideal size and strength to play DE in a 4-3. Ranks with Orakpo in sack production. Rarely used in coverage which could scare teams who want to use him as a 3-4 OLB.
DRAFT GRADE: 82

4. Aaron Maybin Penn St. 6'4 249
Maybin is more of a project pick at this point in time. Lean frame has room to add weight as he is too slow to play OLB. Purely a situational speed rusher at this point who might fit best as, you guessed it, a 3-4 OLB.
DRAFT GRADE: 82

5. Larry English Northern Illinois 6'2 255
English produced 30.5 sacks in his last three seasons at NIU, but against the weaker talent of the MAC. May not have the size or bulk to play DE at the NFL level. Best fit maybe at OLB in a 3-4 scheme.
DRAFT GRADE:81

Interior O-Line Prospects for NFL Draft

The Centers and Guards in this years draft are a deep group with one legit first rounder, multiple second rounders and depth into the third and possibly fourth rounds.
Interior Linemen Grade: C+

1. Alex Mack Center (Cal) 6'4 311
Mack is a rare center who posesses first round talent. Good pass and run blocker who finishes plays. Three year starter, three year First Team Pac-10 performer. Voted top O-Lineman by Pac-10 D-Linemen last two years.
DRAFT GRADE: 87

2. Duke Robinson Guard (Oklahoma) 6'5 329
Robinson is the most talented guard in the draft. Road grading type, but can struggle with quicker DTs. Two time first team All-American.
DRAFT GRADE: 75

3. Eric Wood Center (Louisville) 6'4 310
Athletic center who could play guard in the NFL. Four year starter and three time All Big East performer. Above average run and pass blocker.
DRAFT GRADE: 75

4. Max Unger Center (Oregon) 6'5 309
Started career at tackle. Has the ability to play any position on the line in the NFL. Two time All-Pac 10 performer and four year starter.
DRAFT GRADE: 74

5. Andy Levitre Guard (Oregon St.) 6'3 305
Three year starter at tackle for the Beavers who has played every O-Line position in college. Relies on technique as opposed to sheer athleticism.
DRAFT GRADE: 70

In the Mix: Herman Johnson (Guard, LSU), Kraig Urbek (Guard, Wisconsin), Antoine Caldwell (Center, Alabama)

OT Prospects for the NFL Draft

The Offensive Tackle prospects for the upcoming draft is a long list of talented players. They also have some versatility in the group. A few have played other positions in their careers, some are great run blockers and others excel in the passing game. This is a strong group with depth into the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
OT POSITION GRADE: A-

1. Jason Smith (Baylor) 6'5 310
Jason Smith has become the top OL prospect in this draft. He has great feet to go along with his size. He has the run block abilities of some of the top Guards in the league, he can move off of his first defender and down field. He has good athleticism, being that he was once a TE at Baylor. Smith will be the first OL taken, and if the Lions pass on Stafford they likely will be going with OT Jason Smith.
DRAFT GRADE: 95

2. Eugene Monroe (Virginia) 6'5 311
Eugene Monroe has been on the NFL radar for a couple years now. He is considered more of a Pass Blocking OT, but he is at least average in the run game. He has extremely long arms which will help him hold off top speed rushers in the NFL. He has been beaten in his career by top notch DE's and from time to time struggles to push in the ground attack. He will be gone quickly, but his lack of consistency in the running game should keep him behind Smith.
DRAFT GRADE: 92

3. Andre Smith (Alabama) 6'4 330
Andre Smith has really killed his stock, and his bank account in the last few months. I assume that he will still be a top 25 pick, but he had a legitimate chance at #1 overall before he went all Barrett Robbins lately. He messed up his chance at playing in a bowl game, and followed that up by not hiring an agent early on, and then showed up at the combine out of shape and slow. He then left the combine. Wow, that's really all there is to say. He is a monster OL, but he also could be a serious problem if he goes crazy after he gets his hands on the millions of dollars. He is the most talented OL in the draft, but I think he will be taken around 20-25 because of the concerns.
DRAFT GRADE: 86 (would have been mid 90s without terrible past few months)

4. Michael Oher (Mississippi) 6'4 307
Oher is an amazing athlete for an offensive tackle. He was once considered a top 5 pick but has fallen a bit due to concerns about what has been called a "lack of focus". Some times his motor doesn't run at full speed. He still should be able to start for a team in his first season, and with the proper attention and coaching could be a stud for years to come. Oher will also be taken in the first 25 picks.
DRAFT GRADE: 84

5. Eben Britton (Arizona) 6'6 305
Britton was a star in the Pac 10. He dominated the ground game, and led blockers through mammoth holes. He is a road-grading OT, but lacks the athleticism and arm length to excel in pass blocking at the NFL level. He has a great frame at 6'6, but does not use that frame well against elite pass rushers. Eben spent two seasons at Right Tackle, and his senior season at Left Tackle. He will be playing on the right side of the line for a team next year in the NFL. He should come off the board late in the first round.
DRAFT GRADE: 80

TE Prospects for the NFL Draft

The TE position is one that usually gets ignored when people talk about the draft. This year the number 1 TE isn't even a pass catching star. He is definitely the top TE, but really isn't the type of player that gets a ton of publicity.
TE POSITION GRADE: C

1. Brandon Pettigrew (Oklahoma State) 6'5 265
Pettigrew is not the TE that has been made a hot commodity in the NFL over the past 5 or so seasons. He is a throw back TE, he can make plays in the passing game, but he really is more of a 6th offensive lineman. His athleticism is average at best anymore in the NFL. The way players are looked at these days in the fantasy football world, whoever ends up picking Pettigrew, their fans will not be satisfied with his production. Should be taken in the second half of the 1st round.
DRAFT GRADE: 80

2. Jared Cook (South Carolina) 6'5 242
Cook has the size and speed combo that most NFL scouts look for to be an elite TE prospect. The problem is that his production was not quite that of the top-notch TEs of years past. Cook only had 73 catches and 7 TD in 3 seasons at South Carolina. Some of that definitely could be from the fact that Spurrier has not had a quality QB in that time span. Cook is the best of the 4 or 5 TE that could be drafted between the middle of round 2 and end of round 3.
DRAFT GRADE: 74

3. Chase Coffman (Missouri) 6'6 244
Coffman's production at Missouri is that of a potential first round TE. Pro scouts are not fond of his 4.8 40 time or his lack of blocking responsibilities in Mizzou's offense. Coffman caught 90 passes for 1,000 yards and 10 TD in his Senior season alone. There is no doubt that Coffman can be a great target over the middle, he has a great frame 6'6 244 for the Red Zone. At the very least he will find himself on the field inside the 30 yard line. He should be taken by the end of the 2nd round.
DRAFT GRADE: 74

4. James Casey (Rice) 6'3 246
Has everything you could ever want pass catching wise. He is a great route runner, has great hands, and makes plays in traffic. Casey came into Rice as a QB, and was moved to TE due to his size and athleticism. The only problem is that 6'3 246 is average to small in the NFL for a Tight End. Casey has been looked at by a few teams, but I think the Lions will snag him at the top of the 3rd Rd.
DRAFT GRADE: 73

5. Travis Beckum (Wisconsin) 6'3 238
Is basically a WR playing TE. Injured for most of the 2008 season but had a combined 136 catches for 1885 yards and 11 TDs in the previous two seasons. Size is a concern and so is his poor blocking. He will be used in passing situations and should find himself off the board in the first 3 rounds.
DRAFT GRADE: 70

In the mix: Cornelius Ingram (Florida), Shawn Nelson (S Miss), Andrew Davie (Arkansas)

WR Prospects for the NFL Draft

The WR corps going into the NFL this year is amazing. They have the stars, the depth, and the versatility that are only dreamt of by most NFL scouts. The top is loaded with speed, and size, to go with production. The names are big, and come from some of the best teams, and offenses in the nation. If your favorite team needs a WR they have a good chance of improving at the position in this years draft. DRAFT POSITION GRADE: A+

1. Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech) 6 '1 1/2 210 DRAFT GRADE: 98
The best offensive player in this draft. Future Pro Bowl Wideout. Tremendous talent at Tech, posting 3100 yards over 2 seasons. Included game winning catches, and beating double teams consistently. Graham Harrell was made to look like a star by throwing the ball up to Crabtree. Has size, downfield speed and playmaking ability. Has best hands in the draft. Should go in top 10 picks.
Greatest Strength: Catches in traffic

2. Jeremy Maclin (Mizzou) 6'1 200 DRAFT GRADE: 92
Speed Demon. Ran past defenses throughout career. Makes plays after the catch, great on WR Screen plays and underneath routes. Great return man, can go the distance every time he touches the ball. Good hands, but could improve route running ability. Will drive opposing Defensive Coordinators crazy, as teams will play him in multiple WR spots. Could possibly go ahead of Crabtree, and should stay in top dozen picks.
Greatest Strength: Speed, and lots of it.

3. Percy Harvin (Florida) 5'11 178 DRAFT GRADE: 84
Line him up in the slot, and at KR and you won't have to worry about those 2 spots for years to come. Has ability to take a 5 yard pass 60 yards down field. Can make moves like no other receiver/runner in this draft. Showed his versatility at Florida by playing a lot in the backfield as well as inside/outside WR slots. Looks a lot of Santana Moss when Moss came out of Miami. Should be taken between 15-25.
Greatest Strength: Versatility

4. Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland) 6'2 206 DRAFT GRADE: 78
Workout warrior, impressed mightily at the combine running a 4.30 40 yard dash. Was highly rated throughout his Maryland career, but lacked exposure of top 3 Wideouts. Has good size and top notch athleticism. Has had problems with dropping passes at Maryland, and could possibly be a better athlete than Wide Reciever.
Greatest Strength: Athleticism

5. Kenny Britt (Rutgers) 6'4 205 DRAFT GRADE: 76
Has the prototype body in the NFL. Makes plays over the middle and in traffic. Played in a pro-style offense at Rutgers. Had 2,500 yards over the past two seasons, and 15 TD. Considered by most to be NFL ready, and should be able to play the #2 WR spot for most teams in his first year. Could be the best value in the WR Class as he should be available at the end of round 1.
Greatest Strength: NFL Ready

In the mix: Hakeem Nicks (UNC), Brian Robiskie (OSU), Derrick Williams (Penn St), Brandon Tate (UNC), Mike Thomas (Arizona)

RB Prospects for the NFL Draft

I really like this year's RB class. The two studs of the class before the season started were Beanie Wells (Ohio St) and Knowshon Moreno (Georgia), neither had the heisman level seasons that were anticipated, but both remain at the top of this year's RB class. The thing I like most about this year's class is the 2nd/3rd rd depth. Their is a very good chance that the best NFL players will be taken after the first round.
RB POSITION GRADE: B+

1. Chris "Beanie" Wells (OSU) 6'1 240 DRAFT GRADE: 89
Following the tradition of big bruising backs from Ohio State (Archie Griffin/Eddie George) Beanie will punish opposing tacklers. Wells does not possess breakaway NFL speed, but will get the tough yards, and at the very least will be a great Goaline back. Wells impressed at his pro day, and will battle Moreno to be the first RB off the board. NFL COMPARISON: Larry Johnson

2. Knowshon Moreno (GA) 5'11 207 DRAFT GRADE: 89
Knowshon played on a very talented Georgia team, and played against the best defenses in the country (SEC). He excelled throughout, showed big play potential, and flashes of absolute brilliance. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and is extremely shifty, making defenders miss with his quick feet. Knowshon will be gone sometime in the top 25 picks. NFL COMPARISON: Ronnie Brown

3. Donald Brown (Uconn) 5'10 208 DRAFT GRADE: 86
Played well throughout his career, stayed relatively unknown due to lack of exposure at Uconn. Carried team in Bowl win. Big play threat, and very durable. Rushed for over 2,000 yards his Jr. season leading him to turn pro. Has great hands, and stayed well over 5 YPC even when teams knew that was all Uconn had offensively. Could sneak into first round. NFL COMPARISON: Cadillac Williams

4. LeSean McCoy (Pitt) 5'11 210 DRAFT GRADE: 82
Versatile runner, tremendous between the tackles and has big play ability. Rushed for 1,488 yards and 21 TD for Pittsburgh. Remained healthy throughout college career and excelled in the Red Zone. Needs to improve his blocking skills, but still should be taken in first 2 rounds. NFL COMPARISON: Clinton Portis

5. Shonn Greene (Iowa) 5'9 220 DRAFT GRADE: 78
Banger in his one season at Iowa. Only RB in the nation to rush for 100 yards in every game he played. Very consistent, 6 YPC against the solid rushing defenses of the Big Ten. Has been doubted his whole career and suprised. He will need that to continue that as most think he doesn't have the ability to take success into next level. NFL COMPARISON: Marion Barber

others in the mix: Javon Ringer (MSU), Cedric Peerman (Virginia), Andre Brown (NC State), Kory Sheets (Purdue), Rashard Jennings (Liberty)

Byron Leftwich Signs in Tampa

Will compete for Starting QB job with Josh McCown

Byron Leftwich was signed to a two year deal for 7.5 million dollars today with the Buccaneers. He will have a chance to start in Tampa if he can beat out Josh McCown. The Redskins, and his former Pittsburgh Steelers were both in the mix, but it came down to the fact that Byron wanted a place where he has a chance to play.

The fact that the Lions who only have Culpepper and Stanton on the roster did not even talk to Leftwich points to the fact that they will be taking Stafford at 1 in this month's draft.

sadly, probably Leftwich's most memorable moment

of his football career.

QB Prospects for the NFL Draft

Over the next couple weeks leading up to the NFL Draft on April 25th BL Sports will be breaking down the draft position by position. Today we will start with the QB Position.

I have seen this QB class rated pretty high, but I completely disagree. Stafford is 1st rd quality but not 1st overall where I believe he will be taken. Sanchez is a 2nd rd QB whos stock has risen due to lack of competition at the position. After that you are going to be lucky if your pick ever starts a game.
QB POSITION GRADE: C+

1. Matthew Stafford (Georgia) 6'4 240
Possesses a great arm. Impressed both at Combine and Georgia Pro Day. Has been a pro prospect since he walked onto campus at GA. He has made every throw a NFL team would want, but lacks consistency. Has made many bad throws throughout his career and struggles with his decision making. The SEC defenses are tough, but not as tough as NFL defenses.
DRAFT GRADE: 88

2. Mark Sanchez (USC) 6'3 215
Had a great Junior season, capped with an almost perfect Rose Bowl performance. USC's offense runs a lot of routes very popular in the NFL. Looks like an NFL QB, but lacks experience. From time to time throughout the season Sanchez was very average on an extremely talented team. His performance in the Rose Bowl game, and the Junior class staying in school elevated Sanchez' stock at least a full round. Some teams have Sanchez ahead of Stafford
DRAFT GRADE:82

3. Josh Freeman (K-State) 6'5 1/2 250
Has the build of what is becoming the Prototype NFL QB. Reminds many of JaMarcus Russell, which could be hurting his stock. Lacked consistency but showed flashes of brilliance throughout his career in the Big 12 Conference. Throws a tremendous deep ball, and Kansas State runs a Pro Style offense. Lacks the proper mechanics and footwork needed to be a quality NFL starting QB.
DRAFT GRADE:78

4. Pat White (WVU) 6'0 200
This is the first shocker of the ratings. I know he is not an NFL starting QB, but neither are any of the QBs rated below Freeman. Out of the remaining class of QBs White will have the best career. I believe White will go higher than expected on draft day as did Devin Hester (coming out of college had no position) due to his playmaking abilities. NFL Scouts have raved about White's potential, and with teams looking into Special formations (such as Wildcat) White will be used a lot by whatever team selects him. Due to my lack of confidence in the top 3 QBs of this class I could see White in 3 years having the most impact of any of this year's QB.
DRAFT GRADE:75

5. Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston St) 6'2 225
Bomar originally played with the Oklahoma Sooners, as he was the #1 recruit in the country coming out of High School. He then was cited on 2 alcohol related offenses, and was later kicked out for receiving money he did not earn. He has a big arm, and has been succesful when he has been on the field, but obviously NFL teams wonder about his off the field behavior. Bomar may be worth the risk, but not until at least the 3rd rd.
DRAFT GRADE: 70

OTHERS IN THE MIX: STEPHEN MCGEE ( TEXAS AM), NATE DAVIS (BALL ST), GRAHAM HARRELL (TEXAS TECH), TOM BRANDSTATER (FRESNO ST), JOHN PARKER WILSON (BAMA), BRIAN HOYER (MSU)

NFL's Top 5 Quarterbacks

I know that it is hard for many NFL fans to look beyond statistics. The fact is that most NFL fans are as much fans of their own "fantasy teams" as they are of their home squad. In Michigan, with the dreadful Lions that may be even more prevalent. But the fact is, that if there is any position in professional sports where your value can be based more on your teams success than your individual statistics its a NFL QB. A quarterback in the NFL has the game in his hands more than any other position in any other sport (especially with the rules of the NFL being shifted to help QBs every season).

With all that said I will proceed.

1. Tom Brady
I know that he missed all of last season, but I still remember how good he has been. He has been great on teams with lessor known WR, he has been great on teams with big name wideouts. He rejuvenated the career of Randy Moss, a player who many forget had been given up on by most. He has led the underdog to victory, and carried the favorites to great heights. He is the reason that I will pick the Patriots to win the title come next preseason.

2. Ben Roethlisberger
His career has been that which may be worthy RIGHT NOW of the hall of fame. His winning percentage is among the best ever. If you take out his season following the motorcycle absence, it would be even better. I know that some will argue that his defense has been the reason for the Steelers success. The defense has been great, but Ben makes plays. He converts 3rd and long in the playoffs and 4th quarters of games. Ben doesn't allow himself to get sacked. He is the size of a defensive end, and as elusive as any QB.

3. Peyton Manning
Statistically he is the best. He gets it done. He has had the luxury of a franchise that has spent most of their draft picks on improving his offense (wayne, d clark, Ugoh, E James, Addai) even at the expense of the defense which has lacked at times. But he hasn't had the luxury of the great defenses of the Patriots and Steelers. He has made plays, and has won a Super Bowl, but if you are honest he has failed in the big moments far more times than he has succeeded. In comparison to Brady/Big Ben there is no comparion, those two WIN when the oppurtunity is there.

4. Drew Brees
He doesn't have the winning success of the top tier guys, but he has the statistics of any QB in the league today. He is more likely to throw for over 400 yards than under 200. If he can get any type of defensive help in New Orleans he will get the winning of the other QB. His arm strength was questioned after SD, but that is no longer the case. Brees spreads the ball out as well as anyone, and he also both hits deep WR and the short routes.

5. Philip Rivers
Barely over Kurt Warner and Donovan McNabb. Rivers has the luxury of having a good ground game to help out his passing game. This past season that ground game struggled mightily and Rivers was not shook. Rivers in fact led the Chargers to the playoffs after starting terribly. Rivers has Antonio Gates, but his WR are ones that others had given up on, or didn't believe in to start with. Rivers is not the esthetic choice with his funky short-armed release, but he gets the job done. The Chargers passing game will dominate through the air for the next 5 years plus.

Did the Lions Lose on Cutler?

Everyone knows the Lions don't have a franchise Quarterback. Most Lions fans from my talks don't want this team to take Matthew Stafford. Almost everyone I talked to in the past few weeks about Detroit Area sports at some point mentioned the name CUTLER. Then the trade went through, you read it on the bottom line, or got a text message. Cutler to the Bears!! Then it came across, the Bears gave up a bunch. Definitely a lot, 2 1sts, exchanged a 3rd for a 5th, and gave up Kyle Orton. Everyone's attitude here seemed to change. All of a sudden Lion's fans were happy we didn't trade for Cutler, but why?

The Lions sadly, don't have a QB of Kyle Orton's attractiveness (that doesn't read very well does it) So the Lions probably would have had to give up this year's 20th pick, maybe 33, and definitely next year's 1st round pick. Most people will tell you that pick will be a top ten pick. That's a lot to give up, but here's the thing. You make this trade and you are certain of your Starting Quarterback for the next decade. This is a tough question, and I think it's easy to say that the Bears gave up too much, but if Stafford isn't a franchise quarterback then the Lions will be picking in the top 10 for 5 more years.

Let's look at it this way. The Lions take Cutler at #20 (great, great pick). This means we then give up pick 33 and next year's 1st round pick to ensure we have a quarterback for once. To me I think it's worth it. However, maybe not worth it when you are the Lions. We need to spend this year's draft, next off-season, and next years draft collecting as many talented players as we can. I think I am taking the easy way out of this question by saying, I think the Bears did not give up too much, but I think the Lions did a good job by not giving up the same thing. The Lions need to draft well this year and next and build a group of young talented players. Cutler will be great for the Bears, hopefully Stafford and a new Lions defense will EVENTUALLY be even better.
